  • Upgrade to FCP6 and Quad 3.2 with Kona SD?

Posted by Paul Harb on February 22, 2008 at 11:24 pm

So I finally, and I stress finally upgraded my powermac today. I have been using a dual 2.0, powerPC, 4gig, with a Huge SCSI Raid and the old KonaSD card. My questions are these.

Will the KonaSD card work in the newer PCI Express slots?
Will the UL4D SCSI card work?

Just wondering what will still work as I unpack this computer today….and what expensive stuff…ie..RAID, or capture card, do I NEED to replace. If I dont NEED to do uncompressed HD at this time, do will this stuff just work with newer drivers?

I know thats a lot, anyone going through this or with any info to make this less painful would be appreciated greatly. Thanks.

[Paul Harb] “Will the KonaSD card work in the newer PCI Express slots?”

    No.

[Paul Harb] “Will the UL4D SCSI card work?”

    No

No internal cards from the PCI-X machines will work in the new PCIe machines. I would suggest you at least get a Kona LHe so you can continue to edit SD, but you’re ready for HD.

The big difference between that and the Kona 3 is you can’t up-convert SD to HD with the LHe, but other than that, you’ll get the same performance as your SD.

No clue on the SCSI card and if there are any that work in PCIe machines. Haven’t used SCSI in about two years or so.

[Paul Harb] “Will the KonaSD card work in the newer PCI Express slots?”

No. The old PowerMac had PCI-x slots. The new ones tout PCIe. It won’t work.

[Paul Harb] “Will the UL4D SCSI card work?”

I think not…for the same reason. PCI-X vs PCIe.

This is why I avoided upgrading for a while. Because I have a Dual 2Ghz G5 with eSATA Raid and Kona LH…and so getting the new machine means new machine, new capture card, new RAID card…

    The UL5D is for PCI-e.

Ya thats what I figured…..Ive been hired for the past 2 years on jobs that pay for the systems, which is the norm for feature films…..but I am ready to upgrade everything for HD online.

Kona 3 is a no brainer for me……no anyone selling one? 😉

Also I noticed your using Max Digital, good results? I have always like Huge, now Ciprico…but the Max Digitals Ive been hearing about…..thoughts?

    Thks.

One other question, should I be getting the Kona 3 x? if Im running it on the new Quad 3.2? The only card in it right now is the NiVidia 8800 I think it is….

We tested MaxxDigital, Dulce and Sonnet after three CalDigits in a row went south in a span of 6 months. I purchased two 8TB EVO HD units from MaxxDigital which top out at 500MB/s in RAID 5. So yeah, we’re VERY happy with them and the tech support we’ve been getting from both Maxx and ATTO.

[Paul Harb] “One other question, should I be getting the Kona 3 x?”

No, that’s the older PCI-X version of the card. Kona 3 is for the new PCI-e machines.

The machines come standard with the ATI 2600. If the nVidia is in your specs, then you changed the card.

[Paul Harb] “do I NEED to replace.”

Hi Paul, you can extend the usefulness of the G5 with our Quad / Duo Quad RAID protected SATA setup. Option of PCI-x will run in the classic PowerPC and PCI-e also available for the new Mac Pro.
