Upgrade to FCP Studio on G5?
Posted by Brad Froman on May 4, 2009 at 9:56 pmI would like to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2, and know I have to first upgrade from Mac version 10.3 to 10.5. Does anyone know if I can put 10.5 on my Mac Dual 2Ghz Power PC G5? There is no mention in the system information about it being an Intel processor, so therefore I don’t believe it is. Is the Intel required?

May 4, 2009 at 10:00 pmYou can absolutely install both Leopard and FCS2 on your machine. I would suggest that you clone your present system drive to an inexpensive firewire drive first, just for your own protection. And, perform a clean install of both the OS and FCS2.

May 5, 2009 at 12:31 amI am running FCS on a G5 dual 2.5 with the last Tiger (10.4.11). So if you want to just upgrade your OS rather than switch to Leopard, then I can tell you that FCP 6.0.5 is working without problems on my G5.
If you are going for the complete OS and FCS, then David’s advice to do a clean install on a new drive is wise. That way the old drive can be left in and used to alt boot if you need to. I still have 5.1.4 installed on an alternate boot drive.

May 5, 2009 at 2:52 amKeep in mind Intel is not required, but there are limitations.
For instance, you cannot capture ProRes using a G5.

May 5, 2009 at 3:27 amI have the same G5 and I capture prores at HD rez all the time. Kona card installed but I use firewire from my camera.
HD editing in general is tougher with the G5 but SD is a breeze. -

May 5, 2009 at 4:25 amMy 2¢… stay far, far away from Leopard. In my humble opinion, it’s the OS 9 of OS X.
I run FCS 2.0 under 10.4.11 on hardware similar to yours. I run FCS under 10.5.4 (had to downgrade form 10.5.6 to get things functional) on a late 2007 MacbookPro with nothing but heartache and headache.

Chadwick,
It’s a shame your experience with Leopard wasn’t good, but you are in a very small minority. And, although it’s your right to express your personal opinion here, I think it’s important for Brad and others reading this to know that there are a heck of a lot of professionals successfully running under Leopard on the most modern Apple machines as well a lot of legacy hardware.

May 11, 2009 at 8:22 pmWe actually load/ edit SD material in ProRes on a Dual G5 system, so that is not exactly accurate. We are using Kona LHe cards.
But as always, if you can afford faster system that never hurts!
