    hello

I am new to HD technology so pardon me asking the basics.

I am currently on FCP 4.5 and i understand I can’t capture HD unless I upgrade to version 5.

    My questions are:

    (1) Can i capture HD, using a HD player, using the iLink-Firewire (HDV/DV) connection once I upgrade to version 5? What are the potholes I should look out for?

    (2) Will my current projects (non HD) being done on 4.5 be affected by the upgrade?

THANKS a lot. I look forward to your response.
My system description is as follows:

    System: OSX (version 10.3.6)
    Processor: Dual 2.5 PowerPC G5
    Memory” 8 GB SDRAM

    FCP: Version 4.5 HD

You can certainly edit HD in FCP4.5. That’s why it’s called Final Cut Pro HD.

Only HDV and DVCPROHD can be captured over FireWire AFAIK, but these you can only do in FCP5.

If the current project are opened and in FCP5, they can no longer be opened in FCP4.5. It’s generally not considered a good idea to upgrade a project to a new version. You could rename FCP4.5 and install the upgrade to 5 and have both on your computer. You just have to be careful which one you’re running. Launching a project will always want to launch the newest available version.

    All the best,

    Tom

Just a minor correction (sorry Tom) but DVCPRO HD can be editing with FCP 4.5. The reason it is called FCP HD is that it added native support for capturing DVCPRO HD over firewire.

For HDV you need FCP 5. But all other forms of HD could be edited with FCP HD with the use of an HD capture card.

Quite right, DVCPRO HD could be captured in FCP4.5. Those two flavors are still the only HD formats that can be captured over FireWire.

thank you so much for your response. 🙂

i understand now that I am able to capture HDV via firewire with FCP5, and DVCPro HD on 4.5

But im still a little fuzzy on the other issue:
Are there any known problems with projects done on 4.5 being on 5? Assuming project is already completed and I need to revisit it, and only one project is open at a time,

    Thanks guys.
