upgrade or replace pc
Hi…am considering upgrading to Vegas Pro 10 from 8.0c 32bit and really need some advice on pc builds,etc. Continuous software/hardware upgrades can be costly for someone producing mostly community based shows.
My current pc build is and Intel 2.4ghz quad core/4gb ram/Nvidia GF Force 8800GT 512mb video card/2x 250gb hard drives/3x 1tb external hard drives/ dual dvd drives/XP Pro.
Would appreciate any input as to what upgrades would get me the best bang for the buck to use for hd editing. Would it be better to just replace my current pc which is still in good condition, or upgrade pc components and NLE?
Upgrading my NLE and replacing a pc would be a little tight but possible if i did one at a time. Which would a person do first? Any thoughts??…Thanks

If you are on a tight budget, then you have a decent machine. My secondary machine has an Intel 2.66 GHz quad core/8GB RAM/2x-nVidia 8800GT. It does well, but I recently re-installed Win7 and “cleaned house”. I am very careful what I do with my computers and I am not in the habit of clogging them up with useless software. I mean to say that I keep them pretty trim. If your computer is the one you would test trial software and freeware, surfing, email and such from the internet, then I would pick-up a used laptop to do all that with and clean out this one by doing a fresh install. You will find *ANY* version of Vegas will run better and be more reliable with a clean system.

The only thing I would change is adding more memory. As a rule of thumb you should plan on 2GB of memory per core. A QuadCore should optimally have 8GB of memory. Other than that your system seems fine for video editing.

8GB of memory will only be useful if you had a 64 bit operating system, otherwise you can only see 4GB.
It was not clear in the original post whether your os was 32 bit or 64 bit.
If you are running XP Pro x64, then 8GB is the way to go, and John’s advice is correct.

Good catch Nigel! I missed the part where he said:

You really want to be running Windows 7 64-bit for HD video editing. If you plan to stay on XP then as Nigel said, you are fine with your configuration of 4GB because XP will only see 3GB max and Vegas will only see 2GB max.
