    Hi,

Hope someone can help with this. Avid USA are offering an upgrade to MC – for existing Express Pro users.

I’ve been advised by the local rep (Asia) that the upgrade won’t work since our Mo-jo is not SDI.

    Can anyone tell me more?

    Thanks, Jane

the upgrade will work just fine. The only limitation you’ll have is the same one you have now — no SDI.

This is what’s known as positioning. Avid wants to send a message, that Media Composer belongs with SDI I/O because that’s what “pros” use. Nonsense. Plenty of pros are using FireWire…and over time, more pros will migrate to NO I/O and will go tapeless, skipping SDI altogether.

The other part of the positioning message had been that Xpress Pro was for, let’s say LESS professional pros. Again, nonsense, especially if all you need is analog component to hook up to your broadcast monitor…or FireWire I/O.

The point in both cases was to create a clear difference between the products to justify the price difference.

So here we are today, with only one software solution going forward. You might eventually need HD-SDI to go to an HD deck…and guess what, you can’t do that with Mojo SDI because it’s SD-only.

Avid and its dealers have no reason to make this easy for you. They WANT you to buy SDI. You’ll have to look very, very carefully at Avid’s website to find this:

Avid Mojo and Avid Mojo SDI are compatible with Avid Xpress Pro, Avid Media Composer….,” and a bunch of other things.

Since you already have Mojo you don’t need to be reminded, but neither Xpress or Media Composer need any hardware at all to run. That’s the point.

The great news is that Media Composer is a true joy to use. Even after years of experience with Xpress Pro — I was one of the product managers for Xpress Pro when I was at Avid– I found Media Composer faster and easier to use, with much more flexibility. So I started using Media Composer instead of Xpress all day, every day. Anyone with Xpress needs to stop what you’re doing right now, and upgrade to Composer.

    Have fun,

    Tim

    Hi Tim,

Thanks so much for your clear reply!

I’ve been cutting on MC for more than 10 years, it’s our secondary system that is Xpress. We will go ahead with the upgrade, what I’m not sure about is whether I’m being ‘done’ by the local guys or they are being ‘done’ by Avid USA.

I love Avid, but have had to pick up FCP to get the editing work. I resisted for years, after trying it 5 years ago; but the reality is too many people have bought into it.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

    Hi,
Three weeks before AVID announced the upgrades I received a letter from our AVID rep(Asia) to upgrade my Xpress with Mojo to Composer with MOJO SDI for around Rs 2,80,000 that should be USD6000 (Aprox). It was a limited period offer.
I would have purchased had I not been knowing the developments at AVID.
So my suggestion should be to keep yourself updated.

Regarding upgrade, the AVID rep is misrepresenting .
YOU CAN USE YOUR AVID NON SDI MOJO WITH AVID COMPOSER.I AM USING IT.
Just go ahead…book your upgrade at sites like http://www.videoguys.com and enjoy the DIFFERENCE.

Thanks again – this time to Harcharan.

You are correct, I should keep myself more up to date, I don’t think I’m alone there.

I will purchase from the online sellers and by-pass the local rep…

    Jane
