I am working with final cut pro HD on my G5. I have nested sequences inside a main sequence… so, for example, I have sequences for scene 1, scene 2, 3 etc. which are all made up of multiple clips and tracks and then a larger sequence with all of these individual sequences lined up in the timeline. However, when I go back to change the nested sequences (like if I add a nice sound effect to sequence one) the larger sequence does not update and play the sound. I’m not sure how this works because I figured it was reading from the smaller nested sequence files. How can I get it to update? Thanks.

I’m not sure when that was supposed to have gotten fixed, either in a recent update to 5.0 or in the current 5.1 rev, which is not free. Sorry not to be able to answer this more clearly for you.

However, searching for “nested” or “nest” here on the cow’s FCP forum might get you better information faster than someone can post it for you. We’ve been dealing with FCP’s insufficient nesting capabilities for a long time.

If you do figure it out, please return to your post and tell the rest of us what you did to fix it. Luck.

First of all, the sequence which holds the nested sequence may need to be re-rendered, even if it thinks it does not. Second, I’ve noticed that if you have the nested sequence already open, and you double-click the nested sequence within the parent sequence, FCP HD 5 may make a “copy” of that sequence which does not exist in the bin. So you may have several “ghost” nested sequences which do not relate to the original saved nested sequence. Once this happens, you will have to open the sequence by double clicking inside the parent, and then changing it.

Or just recut the nested sequence back in. Another thing I’ve noticed…if you edit a sequence into a sequence, it will update, but if you copy and paste, it won’t update later on.

Another thing I’ve noticed…if you edit a sequence into a sequence, it will update, but if you copy and paste, it won’t update later on.< Ah, excellent point, I missed that one. Yes, it is critical that you use the proper route from the Browser, where you've got your nest appearing as a sequence, to the main sequence. You cannot copy and paste if you want to have live links running back upstream. The procedures for using nests are all in the manual, imagine that. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
