Updating Media Locations and Maintaining Proxy Access
Hi,
I am in the process of updating my three Drobo storage devices to allow for firmware updates and a resulting capacity limit increase.
This also requires some reorganization of media that has previously been ingested into CatDV which is accessible via proxy files across three workstations using Google Drive (Backup and Sync app) as the location for proxies. Each workstation has access to Google Drive via a local drive. In general this system has worked very well for our purposes.
I began testing the process to “update media locations” for the raw media that will be reorganized as part of the Drobo upgrade, and have hit some snags.
I decided to perform a test of sorts with relatively less important media. I was able to successfully update the media location on workstation #1, and the proxy files remain accessible. I moved to workstation #2, and did not have the same result.
As the original media is not accessible from workstation #2, I added the new full-res media path established on workstation #1 in addition to adding the correct proxy file path. I confirmed that the proxies were accessible on the workstation #2’s Google Drive local location. And tried two variants of the updated media path. Strangely, a few of the audio proxy clips became accessible, but none of the video files reconnected.
I tried a more specific file path on workstation #2 just to see if it made a difference, but no luck. Here’s a screenshot of the workstation #2 paths.
Workstation #1 paths:
Am I missing a step here? I know files paths can be challenging and need to be accurate and specific. I need to find a formula or system to assist in this migration process to avoid breaking all of the catalog work I have achieved over the last three years or so.
Luckily the majority of the media I need to relocate between Drobos from its original CatDV ingest location is older media and not often referenced or critical. Nonetheless I do not want it to be a wasted investment.
Would there be a method to preserve the notes associated with the “offline” media to be translated to the media in its new location?
Or for example in the case of Workstation #1, after the media is successfully updated and proxies relinked, is it wise to remove the original proxy path (highlighted by pink arrow in workstation #1 proxy paths image)? Or is it safer to leave both paths?
Thanks for any advice you might have!
Lindsay
