Updating GPU in early 2008 Mac Pro
Hi all! I’m considering updating my GPU in my early 2008 Mac Pro. This is my workhorse, for both editing in Premiere and digitizing legacy formats for clients. My main goal would be to allow me to edit natively in 4K.
I’ve never replaced the default which I think is the GeForce 8800. And I’m up to 14GB RAM.
Comments? Suggestions? Sympathy?

I have an ATI Radeon HD 5870 Mac Edition in my 2008 Mac Pro. That is the fastest “officially” supported GPU that you can use. If you try and use a non-Mac version GPU you will loose your boot screen unless you have the card flashed with hacked firmware and even if it’s OK not to see the boot screen, you will probably need to add an alternate power source to power some of the more modern cards.
But the ATI Radeon HD 5870 Mac is plug and play if you can find one. I’m not sure how it will handle 4K video but you could always edit with proxies. It will also depend on what video editor you use. Final Cut Pro X will probably perform a lot better than Premiere because Adobe favors NVIDIA cards.
