  • Updating freeze frames with new source media

Posted by Tristan Nieto on August 13, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Does anyone know if a freeze frame clip is referencing its original media, or if FCP creates an independent image file for it somewhere?

I have a sequence with lots of graphics on screen that have been done in AE. Recently I’ve had to update all the graphics due to some minor design changes. I’ve done this by re-connecting the graphics clips to all the new versions, which has worked, except for every time I’ve made a freeze frame – these still show the old version.

Is there a way to update the freeze frames with the new media so I don’t have to throw them all out and do them all again? If anyone knows a way to do this, it would make my life a whole lot easier.

    Cheers.

When you made the ‘freeze frame’ it basically exports whatever is in your viewer window to a flattened still image. You’ll have to make new freeze frames. I know thats not the answer you wanted but maybe somebody has a better idea.

[Tristan Nieto] “Does anyone know if a freeze frame clip is referencing its original media, or if FCP creates an independent image file for it somewhere?”

FCP does not make independent media for freeze frames. If you changed the file the freeze is based on, you may have to make new freezes.

Which begs the question of why did you need to make freeze frames in the first place? were the AE comps not long enough? If so, it would have been better all around to lengthen those comps & re-render from AE. Did you want the animated graphics to stop at specific places for specific durations? Again, this would have been better handled by doing it in the AE comp.

    Thanks for the responses.

In response to your question, Arnie, I didn’t do the AE stuff on this project. I’m just coming on at the end to finish it off and send it out. But I think the reason was that the graphics are designed with an animated intro and outro, but still in the middle. Instead of making a new movie file for each graphic, they’ve just done one with no text elements which we can lay down and adjust to size, the type over the top. The previous editor on the project just used a freeze frame prolong the pause before it animates out, which in fairness I probably would have done too.

I’ve now extended the pause by just repeating the still section of the clip so it can be reconnected later if it needs another change. Next time I’d just suggest to make the pause in the middle impractically long so you can cut it down to size.

    Cheers everyone

If it was me, I’d export the freezes in question with an alpha channel. That makes new media that can be placed. In the future, you may want to request that in advance from the graphics people.
