  • updating clip metadata WHILE another editor is using project?

    Hi everyone –

I’m working my first job as an assistant editor for a TV show. We’re using FCP (3 editors, all working at the same time, accessing footage off a server). The schedule is extremely rushed and as a result I usually don’t have time to give editors a project that is properly logged to my own standards. I’ve been asked by my supervisor to keep logging the footage while the editors are using the FCP project. I couldn’t figure out a way to do this, but my superiors simply rebut that “we do it all the time in AVID unity – find a way.”

So, here’s my question to you FCP experts out there: Can I update the log notes, change REEL names, or even add bins/footage WHILE someone else is using the project? Any help would be appreciated.

FCP is not Avid in this regard. Are you using FCServer?

No, not using FCS. Would using FCS enable those options I listed?

Well, I’ll say it again, FCP is not Avid in this regard, BUT, FCServer will allow metadata editing/tracking much easier than FCP. The probelm with sharing FCP projects (even with FCServer) is that only one person can be owrking on a project at one time. In FCServer, an editor physically checks out a project to prevent overwrites and weirdities, but that doesn’t mean a workflow couldn’t be developed involving multiple projects. The metadta tagging in FCServer is much more robust that FCP, but it’s not without issue. There’s a FCServer forum here on the cow, perhaps you should swing over there and ask some questions about how it might streamline your workflow.

Also, take a look at Editshare.
