Updated sequence conform and color problems
Let’s see if I can explain this strange and annoying behavior of my 8.1 Resolve.
I have an existing project where I colored 2 sessions. One session has all local grades (so I can create a different look without the grades copying over to the other session) and the other session has just one remote default grade per shot.
I just got an updated version of the sequence. So I take my new updated AAF and import it into the Resolve. I would expect that the new AAF would come in, and I would have 3 sessions. My initial 2, and the new one that would have the same grades as the session with the default remote grades. Well that is not what is happening at all! Grrrr!
I tried to bring in the AAF 2 different ways. The first way is the way I normally work. I import any new media into the pool (in a new sub-folder) and then I import the AAF. I tell it to look in the new sub-folder and also the original sub-folder for the media. Here is what happens in this case. The AAF imports fine, and it links up properly to my media. Unfortunately none of the grades copy over. The sequence has no color on it, and I have to start from scratch again (since ColorTrace does not work within the same project!). To make matters worse, my original sessions have been altered and are not the same anymore. The color grades are still there, but some of the shots are now the wrong shots. For some reason, Resolve has changed the media links in the old sessions. For some of the shots, they do not match the reference anymore. What’s weird, is that the same shots that are wrong in the old sessions are correct in my newly imported AAF/session.
So I then tried to import the AAF by using the ‘automatically import source clips’ option (after I close and reopen the project, not saving changes). This time things go wrong, but in a different way. This time the new AAF/session imports fine and matches my reference. This time, some of the grades do copy over ok. But also some of the grades ‘copy’ over, but are just empty grades with no correction in them. Why? And my original 2 sessions are changed again! This time the session with the local grades loses all of it’s grades and is back to no color. Why would that ever happen? I tried to change the grade on one of those shots to Local version 1 and the grade came back. Do I have to do that for every single shot manually?? My 2nd session that had the default remote grades keeps some of it’s grades and loses others. All the shots still have grades on them, but some are just empty grades.
Am I doing something really wrong? Why would my grades change like that just when I import an AAF? And why do the grades not copy over correctly to the new session? I do want to know when I set local grades on a session, that they will stay that way and not change (the point of a local grade).
Just quite frustrating and scary to see all your work go bad when you import a new AAF. I thought bringing in new/updated sequences was supposed to work well.
Thanks for reading and I hope someone can help!
