  • Update to FCS2 Question

Posted by Pat Defilippo on July 11, 2007 at 2:10 pm

    Hello all!

Yesterday, I updated a client to FCS2 from FCS1. Per my instructions, they ordered two copies of the FCS2 software because they have a G5 Desktop and a G4 PowerBook both with individual copies of FCS1 already installed.

The G5 Desktop upgrade went perfectly. No problems, everything’s great!

The G4 PowerBook, however, didn’t go as well. Turns out the OS is 10.3 plus it only has 1GB of RAM. So, it didn’t even get through the first install disk!

Instead of upgrading the OS to 10.4 for $129 and dealing with FCS2 on a slower laptop, this client is doing well enough to buy a whole new MacBook Pro (2.4ghz and all) and install FCS2 on that once it arrives!

So, here finally is the question. Does this mean I would first need to install their version of FCS1 onto the new MacBook Pro and then UPGRADE to FCS2? Or, is there a way to just install the upgrade version of FCS2 on the MacBook Pro with no previous version of FCS on it?

Thanks in advance for your help!
    -Pat

You have the possibility of using the upgrade assistant on the new mac, It will move files and applications including settings from the old machine to the new machine. You can when upgrade to FCS 2 from the old version. I recently moved all informations from a mac mini to my new Mac Pro that way and it worked flawlessly

Let the machine work for you. Not you for the machine

I haven’t tried it with FC Studio 2, but with these kinds of programs you can generally just run the update and put in the older number when it asks for it.

Try it, anyway. The worst it will do is not install and then you just go back and load version 1 first. No harm done.

And secondly, how will these systems be used? The Final Cut license allows one version of final cut to be used on 1 desktop and 1 laptop provided they aren’t used at the same time. So if they edit on the desktop at home and the laptop when on the road then they can return one of those Studio packages and just use one on both computers.

If, however, they often use both computers at the same time then they’ll want to stick with the 2 copies like they have now.

    Hi Jan and Jeff,

Thanks very much for your good ideas and quick replies!

Jan, I like the idea of the Mac setup assistant – I forgot I did that myself from my old PowerBook to my new MacBook Pro. That should do the trick, and I think I’d be able to just select “Applications” to transfer (and then upgrade to FCS2) since I don’t think they’d want anything else anyway (documents, etc).

Jeff, I will try installing FCS2 using their original number before doing the Mac setup assistant. I explained the benefit to them of using multiple computers as “render farms” for Compressor and Motion, and they liked the idea. So, for this reason, they would need the two seperate serial numbers.

    Thanks again very much!
