Upconverting via Kona – 29.97 Anamorphic DV to 23.98 DVC Pro HD

You can’t change frame rates from 29.97 to 23.98 in the Kona. You would require something like a Terranex to do this.

Would it work if I captured the DV footage as normal dv footage then converted it to dvc pro footage via compressor?

That will most likely look like crap. You really want hardware conversion for this process.

Would it be a better idea to downconvert the hd footage to sd instead and just edit in an sd 29.97 timeline for the project? I have to mix dv footage with 23.98 dvc pro footage, as well as still images. the deliverable will be on a dvd so it will have to be converted to sd for that anyway.

If you’re playing the DVCPro HD footage off a deck, then yes, simply capture the DVCPro HD to SD. The deck plays in 59.94 at all times anyway so you can simply capture from 59.94 to 29.97 SD.

Yeah, I knew that would work. I just wanted to see if there was an easy way to go from SD to DVC PRO because I already captured 5 tapes of the DVC PRO footage. I guess I’ll just recapture it in a downconverted format.

I’d try compressor with a test clip, what’s the penalty?

If you turn on all the ‘best’ options, it’s going to take a while, but I bet you get decent results.

Actually you should try compressor. it will take a long time but on a new computer it might work for you, and actually it does not look like crap it looks pretty good.

I tried a 10 second test clip and it took 10 minutes on a 2×2.26 dual-core intel mac.
I had some other programs running while it was still converting but that is still pretty rediculous. might work if I leave all my clips converting over night.
