  • Upconvert Quality Question – Teranex Mini vs. Kona3

Posted by Tim Mclaughlin on February 22, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Has anyone noticed a significant difference in the visual quality of the upconversion provided by the Mini vs. the Kona3?

I have K3, I’m wondering if it’s worth getting the Mini too.

Not looking at frame rate conversion, I know that’s a whole other deal, best left to the “heavy iron” of Alchemist, etc.

[Tim McLaughlin] “Not looking at frame rate conversion,”

That’s a big consideration. What format are you going from and to?

My main use for a Teranex Mini would be to upconvert BetaSP or DigiBeta to HD.

If I was doing major frame rate conversions, I’d send it out.

    1080i? 720p24? 720p30? 720p60? 1080psf24? to combine with other already shot HD?

For digibeta to HD you don’t need anything more than the K3.

For BetaSP to HD, it may be worth getting a Teranex Mini for the extra features like noise reduction and better deinterlacing.

Did you ever buy the Teranex Mini? I am interested in the same kind of upconversion and would like to find out if the mini was good at that.

the teranex mini does not do 24p/ 25p content.

    Dear Gary

This is a late question, but when would one need SD 25p to HD 25p? These days?
However, the point is worth mentioning, that even if you don’t need that workflow, I often need to convert HD 1080i to HD1080p. Which the teranex clearly can’t do.

What would you recommend as the next best solution?

    thanks
