Upconversion with Panasonic 1200A
Posted by Todd Drezner on November 19, 2006 at 5:39 pmDoes anyone know the menu settings to use on the Panasonic 1200A when upconverting DV to DVCPro HD? I thought I had it correct, but when I try to capture I get a message that there is no video. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks,
Todd

November 19, 2006 at 7:18 pmYou have to go into the Video menu and change to 480i>720p or 1080i (whatever format you are upconverting to). Hook the super out to a composite input of your monitor to easily view the menus. After that setup your capture card to capture this newly chosen format.

November 19, 2006 at 7:26 pmThanks. Is this something that can only be done with a capture card? Is it not possible with a direct firewire connection?

November 20, 2006 at 12:08 amHmm, good question. I have never tired out of the firewire. I would think that you couldn’t. Might be time to bust out that invaluable manual.

It definitely downconverts via Firewire, I honestly don’t know if it upconverts as well.

November 20, 2006 at 1:09 amI haven’t had any luck, but I’ve gotten some suggestions on the Varicam forum, which I will try when I’m back in the office tomorrow. Thanks.

November 20, 2006 at 2:44 amI just read your post over on the Varicam forum and you say you have your easy setup to 720p24. The deck will not change the frame rate for you. If you can the deck to up-convert through firewire, you will have to capture at 720p60 and convert to 24p using a plug in from nattress or use compressor. Your mileage may vary.

November 20, 2006 at 3:43 amIt will upconvert from DV to DVCPRO HD via firewire…but as was said, 720p60 at 59.94, not 23.98. Then you can either use the DVCPRO HD Frame rate converter, or just drop into the timeline and render. We have a LOT of footage that was captured that way.

November 21, 2006 at 8:28 pmyou can upconvert via FW as long as both boards are in the deck;
However – since there are not flags in the same manner on the DV tape as on the HD tapes, the content will not pass thru the FRC software – the 24p timecode on the DV tapes is not passed on when doing an up-conversion in my experience.
yes it is easier with a capture card than it is with the deck alone.
