June 24, 2005 at 10:48 amIt’s not bad. What I think is missing is the line doubling of many hardware based upconverters. We’ve had to upconvert via a Terranex for a show I’m working on now and it’s much cleaner than the Kona 2 upconvert because there’s clearly line doubling. With the footage upconverted via Kona, you could clearly see some “jaggies” on round surfaces from the interlaced footage

June 24, 2005 at 12:22 pmIs there a place that rents the Terranex upconverter? It sounds like the way to go for upconverting.

Doubtful. It’s about a $100 – $150k box that’s not exactly portable. You need to find a facility that has one installed like a film to tape transfer facility. We have a fantastic facility here in Atanta called CineFilm which are a great bunch of folks. http://www.cinefilm.com. You can ship your tapes here and have them shipped back to you.

June 24, 2005 at 5:20 pmThe teranex offices are actually in orlando… If you contact them i’m sure they can direct you to a facility in the area that has their box.
Personally I prefer the quality of the Snell & Wilcox Alchemist upconvertor for SD-HD conversions.

June 24, 2005 at 9:08 pmTeranex was absorbed by another company. I believe that Teranex is no longer in Orlando – they were on Sand Lake Road and OBT Greg ! – about 3 mintues from you. But they ain’t there now, and they NEVER rented anything from their manufacturing plant.

June 24, 2005 at 9:57 pmThey are still in orlando… they got bought by silicon optix… but still operate as a seperate division. Their offices are on southland blvd. I meet with the product manager just last week.

You are incorrect. They are still there and in business. They were purchased by Silicon Optix who is extending the research into the consumer market, such as for high-end HD home customers. Teranex systems are still available for purchase and they were at NAB with new products. Post houses who have purchased these devices rent time as a service. The closest, I believe, is Cineworks in Miami.
There is a whole lot more going on in what they do than “line doubling”. This is just scaling and that’s precisely what Kona2 does. That is easy, but more simple, when compared to what boxes like Teranex, Snell & Wilcox or even a Quantel iQ do with the image.
Sincerely,
