    Hello-Stop

    Need Help-Stop

Hunkered Down In the Edit Suite-Stop

I have a Documentary that needs/wants to finish in HD.

We have multiple SD and HD formats involved in NTSC and PAL.

1/3 of the project is shot on Beta SP, 1/3 is shot on PAL DV Cam and 1/3 is shot on various HD formats- NTSC-DVCPRO HD, NTSC HDV and NTSC/PAL XD Cam.

Plus, there is a good deal of news archive footage which I’m not sure what format it will be delivered in.

We are planning on buying a Matrox MXO2 or a Kona 3 for the taped based formats to do a hardware upconvert. Leaning towards the Mxo2 because of price.

How should I handle the PAL to NTSC conversion?

One third of the show is 25fps, one third is 23.98 and one third is 29.97. Should I convert everything to 23.98 and what should I use to do this conversion?

    Thanks for your suggestions,

    Rafael

[rafael August] “How should I handle the PAL to NTSC conversion? “

Send to a post house with a Terranex…have them do the PAL>NTSC conversion and the upconvert in one shot. They can take QT files.

OR…if this is source footage…first use Cinema Tools to CONFORM the footage to 24fps…then you can convert to 29.97 with Compressor easier. It can deal with 23.98 to 29.97 better than 25 to 29.97.

Hold your horses, pilgrim. What will you be required to DELIVER? This is the thing you need to know FIRST, then you base your editing workflow on that. Don’t know that? Find out. If you need to deliver 23.98, it would be wise to work at 23.98…if 29.97, then work at 29.97. Stands to reason, no?

    Shane,

I was hoping you would read my post. Thanks.

We will deliver what ever format I suggest after I sort out the mess. They have no broadcast plans but hope for it. They will do the film festival circuit and then it will go to DVD.

    I was thinking 1080i 24fps

24fps because is seemed like it made the most sense considering all the formats being used.

If it went to broadcast them I could output 1080i 29.97 through a Kona3 or Mxo2 and add the pulldown after the edit.?

They can’t afford to send all the tapes to a house to be converted on a terranex.

    My problem actually gets bigger.

I am taking a project that has been on Sony Vegas for five years and transferring it to FCP. The project is a mess, with original source material captured with different codecs and frame sizes and frame rates than the original.

I’m using automatic duck to take an AAF into FCP and then bring it on line. It works as long as there are no effects on the Vegas Veg File.

Since everything has been goofed up I wanted to capture all the tapes again and upconvert them with a capture card.

The Migraine kicks when I think about how everything will be off when I bring it online once I have converted all the footage to a single format.

Feels like hell but I like a challenge.

If you go 23.98, then converting the PAL to that would be MUCH easier…just CONFORM. And converting 29.97 to 23.98 is easy as well. And when you have 23.98, you can always add pulldown when you output, right.

This does sound like a mess. Been there…

    Shane,

For my P2 and XD Cam files what is the best way to convert those files. I’m planning on using ProRes for all the sd footage that I up convert. Would this be something I do with Compressor to convert the p2/xd cam files to ProRes or is there a better way.

    Thanks,

    Rafael
