  • Up Res 720p to 1080p inside Davinci?!

Posted by Tito Da costa on December 15, 2011 at 3:03 pm

I’m grading a project with DVCPro HD 720p but need to finish at 1080p, as I have other 1080p elements to mix in.
Would you recommend doing the up res inside Davinci, or is a 200% blow up too much for it to handle and retain quality?

Would I be better off doing this before, on another aplication?

I also need to deinterlace some footage. Should I do this inside Davincy as well? Or should I also use another aplication before bringing it in?

Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated!!!

    Thanx! ; )~

i think you should de-interlace the footage before u bring it into davinci as as far as i know davinci is not that good with interlaced stuff but for the upresing you should do it in davinci bcoz it has better image processing capabilitise than most of the softwares around.
correct me if i am wrong

Generally software uprez isn’t well-regarded anywhere, and most broadcasters recommend that hardware solutions be explored first.

De-interlacing is touchy, I did a bunch of 2997i conversions to 2398P yesterday in SHAKE. Pretty nice, when I set the Motion interpolation to BEST. However, it did take about 5 minutes to render out 36 frames.
BEST took out all the inter-field motion blur, and the (hockey) footage took on a high-shutter-angle film look after that.

    Thank you for your replies!

I’m seeing some really good results upresing inside of Davinci!!!

The on the fly upres to 1080p done by the blackmagic out an FCP 720p timeline, to my 99” projection screen via component output, doesn’t look good at all… So I’m confused… Not sure what to do… Quality is a priority for this job!

I don’t have an HD deck to test this further and I would hate to waste money renting one and being disapointed with the results…

Is there a by the book way to do this?
