    I am simply trying to shatter a text into bricks by using the Shatter effect. The problem is when i apply Shatter to a text layer, the sides look transparent as opposed to the back and front. So i am losing the extruded text look. Why is that happening? When i try the same thing with a “solid”, everything looks fine. Why is it not working with the text? What should i do to get an extruded looking text shattered into bricks?

    Here are some screenshots of the problem:

    This old tutorial [link] covers a lot of “fake” 3d in After Effects including how to use Shatter to make 3d text. See if the tips therein help.

    If you really want to get into Shatter, Check out this motherlode of info [link]

    short answer, go into the textures properties and try setting the side mode to ‘color’. you can also choose another layer to use, just make sure the layer doesn’t have transparency or you’ll get a similar problem.

    @Kevin Camp

    I tried what you told. I set the Side Mode to “Color”. Nothing happened. Then i also selected a comp sized solid as Side Layer, it didn’t work either. This is what i am getting:

    in the shape properties, try setting pattern to ‘custom’ and the custom shatter map to the text layer.

    That way i am able to get an extruded text. But the letters are shattered as a whole. What i am after is to shatter this extruded text into “bricks” or say “puzzle”. Yet, we are unable to select those options when “Custom” is selected.

    May be the result i am after is just not possible to achieve with Shatter?

    now i see what you’re after.

    unfortunately that’s not possible with the shatter effect, though that would be really cool if it could

    I agree with Kevin though you could get close using VideoCopilots 3D PreCompose script to link a camera in a precomp to the main comp.
