Unusual Question…
Posted by Jim Zito on May 16, 2005 at 2:13 pmAnyone have a quick fix for eliminating light reflections on the top of a bald person’s head? I know this must have come up before, but a search for “bald” resulted in a post where someone asked how to add shine to bald head, funny enough.
Thanks a bunch!

May 17, 2005 at 12:11 amA quick mock-up in Photoshop:

Duplicate the layer, set it’s transfer-mode to “Darken”
Add a Median filter and cranck up the radius untill the spot is filled with flesh-tones.Create a mask, so all the other bright areas won’t be affected.
PS: I don’t know the guy, but he’s the coach for the bald eagles team, so he ranked up there with google image-search 😉

May 17, 2005 at 4:53 pmI might add that this technique works brilliantly using Lighten mode when you are trying to get rid of darker than skin or darker than (any surface really) spots, or blemishes.

May 17, 2005 at 8:11 pmYup, Chris,
it was your post from last week about wrinkles that triggered the idea.

As far as the effect, I noticed you used median instead of blur. I haven’t tried median. Does it have a more convincing effect?

May 17, 2005 at 11:15 pmHey Filip and Chris,
Thanks so much for the help. I don’t think it’s gonna work though. I couldn’t get it to look convincing. The spot is a little more intense and bigger on my guy than on your example, Filip. Also, I don’t know if it makes it tougher, but he’s black too. I guess I’ll just have to live with it! Thanks again guys. This forum is the BEST!!!Jim

May 18, 2005 at 12:23 amWhen you use blur and you have a bright head in front of a dark background, the dark starts to creep into the edges the more you blur.
Also the color and contrast fade away (obviously) on higher settings
Median always seemed to me like a blur that’s trying to ‘hold on to edges’, in this case it gives a nicer skintone, then the grey gaussian-blur.
Might work a charm for those blemishes too, especially at the edge of a face.

(Joey’s girlfriend moves to Washington dc)
Joey: Nonono, I’m in a very delicate place right now, no being sad, okay, I need you to say something to cheer me up
Alex: Okay, remember that video of that monkey riding the dog -

May 18, 2005 at 12:55 amBrilliant. Yeah, the median seems perfect for it. Thanks for the comparison.
Thanks for the Joey reference. I’ll pass that along to the ad agency (Kerker) and the trainers. Whiplash (the monkey cowboy) has been a rodeo attraction for many years before the Taco John’s spots. The agency heard about the monkey/dog show and thought what a perverse icon that would be for a taco chain so they wrote that concept. Do the spots air where you are by chance?
