  • Unusual (and undesired) coloration?

Posted by Calvin Lam on August 27, 2010 at 12:14 am

I’ve had no problem with Sony Vegas up until this point, but while I was editing some footage today, I noticed (in the preview) that my video’s colors are much deeper than usual. You can see it as follows:

As you can see, the correct colors from the original video is shown on the track, but a completely darker image is shown in the preview (and thus, the rendered video).

Did I accidentally turn something on? How do I fix this? Thanks!

That’s a strange one, it might be the pixel format under preferences. That can alter the brightness on the output monitor but I’m not sure about the Vegas one. (32/8 bit video)

Hmm, I just tried switching between 8-bit and 32-bit floating point, but that doesn’t seem to be the problem (I’ve never had problems with the 8-bit format in the past).

My template is currently at HDV 1080-24p (1440×1080, 23.976 fps), which should be correct, and my pixel aspect ratio is at 1.3333 (HDV 1080), which also seems normal.

What about selecting the “Vegas color scheme” under display in preferences?

is it the timeline that’s brighter or the preview monitor that’s gone darken? Nothing to do with windows display settings?

If you load an old project is it the same issue?

Some good news! I just found out why this is happening.

It turns out that the selected video (the one that’s turning into the unusual colors) was located below a track that was set to “overlay.” Because of this, it affected all the videos below that overlaying track. I figured this because I inserted a new video track on the very top, and all the colors were completely normal–until I moved it past and below the overlaying track, and the colors changed.

I removed the overlay on that track and now everything’s normal again. Thanks for the help, Joel! However, I would like to know if there’s some way to set a track to overlay and prevent that undesired effect from happening.
