I’m in AE 7 at the moment and have been unable to import simple quicktime .mov, .avi, or .mpg files for some odd reason – I just get the error “After Effects error: an unspecified AVI or DirectShow error occurred. (1) (53::33)

    Any ideas?

AE doesn’t play nice with MPEG footage and depending on the codecs used on the QTs/AVIs you’re importing your PC/Mac might not have those codecs installed. Do the clips in question play OK in Quicktime player/Windows Media Player?

Yes, as a matter of fact – they play just fine with quicktime et al, that’s what has perplexed me about all of it…

Hmmm…don’t know then I’m afraid. I’ve had this with certain QTs before, but I think it was a conflict with the hardware card on that particular machine.

Your best bet is to try Adobe knowledgebase or forums, or just email the error code to Adobe direct? you may be waiting a while to get a reply off them but it’s worth a go.
