  • UNIVERSAL UPGRADE — NEED IT B4 FCP 6 @ NAB?

Posted by Jim Blokland on February 11, 2006 at 9:41 pm

    Hello:

I own FCP Studio and am wondering what use the Universal upgrade would be for me at this point — with NAB coming shortly and the probable? introduction of FCP 6 do I need this? I’m running a DUAL G5 and will be for awhile. Is there any downside/cost issue in not upgrading to Universal now? Will I be penalized either in upgradeability and support or price going forward? Will Apple continue to support the G5 vs. the Intel until I’m ready to buy a new CPU?

    Any thoughts welcome.

    Best, JIM.

The Universal upgrade is ONLY for owners of PCIe systems. If you don’t own a PCIe system, then you don’t need it.

Oh and if Apple does debut FCP 6 at the show, don’t expect it to be available anytime soon. Maybe by the end of the year, but certainly not anytime shortly after the show.

Was it v4.5 that was announced at the 2003 (2004?) NAB and available for immediate FREE download?

    Walter,

You say the universal upgrade is for people with the PCIe machines, I can’t find out what it’s going to improve…or fix? Can you fill us in?

    Thanks,
    Tim

    ‘I can’t find out what it’s going to improve…or fix? ‘

The current FCP 5 will not run on the new Intel MAC so its a big fix if you have an Intel chip hence the new software but for the rest of us wait until FCP 6

Walter I dont think that is true. The PCIe machines ala the quad G5 and the new dual core 2.3 and 2.5ghz run quite well using the regular FCP studio software and have been since they were introduced. The universal version is only for people using the new intel based machines, which as of this point the only ones on the market are the new imac and the macbook pro

This is correct. I was thinking of the Intel machines when I said PCIe, which of course, the Intel machines will be PCIe based.

By it’s very definition the universal binaries run on PPC and Intel. All future versions will be Universals. Whether you install them on PPC or Intel. So the only people that will NEED them will be the new intel Users, but I also assume that on that day, if you were to go purchase FCP 5 for your new G5, it would be a universal binary.

It is usually announced at NAB and released in June.

Actually, some of the comments mentioned so far are somewhat inaccurate.

Yes, you would need the universal version to run FCP 5.x “U” on an Intel-based Mac.

However, according to the Apple webcast on the release of the Universal versions of the pro apps, all future updates to FCP 5 will be based on updates to the universal version. So, if a FCP 5.0.5 update, for example, comes out in early April, you will need the universal version installed to be able to install that update. Apple says the entire codebase, whether you’re on a PPC or Intel Mac, has moved to the universal version.

For reference, check out the webcast on the Apple Sale Web (available to Apple Certification Alliance members, e.g., anyone that is FCP certified).

So, there is a reason to “upgrade” to the universal version of FCP 5.x.x for use on a PPC-basesd Mac. Hope this clears up things a bit. We’re certainly in store for a wild ride….
