  • Uninstalling Final Cut 6

    Hi all:

I’ll be in a situation where I will need to install my copy of FCP onto a laptop to use remotely for about a week. At the end of the week, the laptop must be returned and I’ll go back to working from my suite.

What is the proper procedure to uninstall Final Cut so that a serialized copy of my software isn’t hanging out there? Is there an actual “uninstaller” on the install CD’s, or do I just trash the files in the Applications folder, or…?

SO this is not your laptop? Is it a rented laptop or a friends?

No, it’s not mine – which is why I’ll be returning it and need to remove all of my software. It belongs to the company I work for.

If were you, I’d clone the regular system drive, then do a reinstall of everything you need on the laptop. When you are finished, simply clone back the original.

    OK…can of worms here.

How do I “clone” and “clone back the original?”

    Tom

PS – Barring this, are you aware of the proper uninstall procedure?

Uninstalling Final Cut Pro 6 involves deleting every program, every resource, every preference file, every piece of media, every directory by hand, for every application in FCS2. There’s no uninstall utility.

So, you can google that info if you want OR you can clone. To clone one disk to another you need to download a program like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. You take an empty firewire drive that is as big or bigger than your laptop drive and run one of those programs to clone the information from your internal drive to the external drive. This makes a bootable clone (copy) of whatever is on your laptop. Then unplug that firewire drive and put it away for later. Install FCS2 on the internal drive and do your project. After it is complete, Backup anything that you want to keep from the laptop (such as the project file and any ancillary media). Once that’s done, plug in the firewire drive, restart the laptop and hold option while the computer boots up. You will be presented with an choice of which drive to boot from, choose the firewire drive. Then simply run SuperDuper or CCC and clone the info from the firewire drive back to the laptop internal drive. It sounds much more complicated than it really is.

Forgive me for jumping in…What happen Jeremy if I don’t use an empty drive? That is if with CCC I unclick the “Cancel destination drive” choice? Is it better to use an empty drive? I just got my FCP Studio 2 software and want to go about upgrading in the correct way.
    Thanks!

Do you mean “Erase destination drive”? There’s no problem accept that if you need to clone that drive back to anything, it will clone that data back as well…

I tend to have a drive that is just a clone and doesn’t hold anything else. That way if something does go down I don’t have to mess with anything else on there I simply clone back, but it’s completely up to you.

    Thanks Jeremy,
that’s what I meant. My MacOS is in italian and I wasn’t sure how to traslate it! Thanks for the clarification. I have an XRAID and am freeing up half of it since I don’t have any other external drive available. I edit heavily so hopefully any problems of FCP 6 will show up readily and I’ll be able to claim back the disk that my clone is vacationing on!
    Thanks again, kim

I would not clone to an Xraid as I don’t think you will be able to boot from it.

    Sorry, my Italian is awful.
