I finally did it: I chose the wrong external hard drive to reformat. Fortunately, the drive was a backup, but just on the off-chance that it has some files that I may need, I’d like to recover it. There are many utilities on offer to recover my data, but they look dodgy (“free” but then, not really free). If anyone has had personal experience with this and could recommend either software or information on how to use the command line to recover data, I’d much appreciate it. Mac Sierra 10.12.6. Thanks!

I had satisfactory results with DiskDrill after a major drive catastrophe. You can find out in demo mode whether it’s worth it to you to pay for the fully featured version. I only used it for one day for one catastrophe, but I thought it was well worth the $75 or $80. I hope I never have to use it again.
