I am currently working on a project that requires unfolding of a world map made up of tiles. I was able to find a script that does this that I saw on a Pixel lab tutorial (https://youtu.be/CoVy_HAF-z4)

The script itself was created by a guy named Rown. I got it to work but I ran into several obstacles that I wasn’t able to solve, that I am not sure can be used with this script. If it can, then can someone please tell me how spacing, thickness, and rounded edges between the tiles can be achieved?

The video that I had seen that inspired me to do this is and what I am trying to achieve is below.

    https://youtu.be/KNUxRHKkeSY

Questions I have in achieving this:

    1. How do do I get the spacing in between the tiles
    2. Is there an alternate way in achieving this effect without the script from Rown?
    3. How do I get the thickness on the tiles so they don’t appear flat such as a polygon used from a plane? ( I have tried several ways such as loft Nurb, rounded edges, and a cube with rounded edges, and used a plane effector but that still doesn’t achieve the unfolding effect that is in the video.
    4. Assuming this is created in a 3D program such as C4D then brought into After Effects for the the City names and the colored boxes, and the video and pictures displayed within the boxes, I am wondering what is the correct procedure in doing this as well. I am also assuming that a tag has to be used for the box? What about the multiple boxes seen in the video?

Anyway, I would really appreciate if someone can help me solve this problem.

    Thanks

I suspect the video is using a fake unfolding effect rather than actually unfolding a stack of objects.

What I would do is use a MoGraph to create the “unfolded” map and then use a couple (or more if necessary) effectors to create the appearance of unfolding. In the file below I used two plain effectors. On is scaling the clones up from -1 (invisible) so it appears as if they are unfolding, and the other is rotating them 180 degrees.

In order to get the thickness and separation of the tiles I think you will need to use an animated cloner to create the rows. Something like this:

Edit: I didn’t see Adam’s response until after I posted this. But there’s always several ways to approach a problem.

    Hello Jim
Thanks for the tip. You are right, there is more than one way to accomplish this, and your example is just as effective.

    Thanks for your assistance.
