I finally migrated from my aging MBP 17″ to a new iMac, but when launching FCP, it unexpectedly quits with the message that it is due to the defocus plug-in. I have no idea if this is an Apple plug-in or third party. What is my next move?

It’s an FCP Blur filter. This can happen if the settings is too high and the graphics card can’t handle it. Try opening the project first holding the Option key. This should open the project with all the sequences closed. If that works. Try to just open the sequence that has the filter applied. If it doesn’t open the project with the sequences closed then try the FCS Maintenance Pack from Digital Rebellion.

    All the best,

    Tom,

It doesn’t seem like it should be the card as I’ve moved up dramatically in power. Can I open FCP without opening any project just to make sure everything is working with the transition to the new computer itself?

    Thanks.

Hold the Shift key while the application launch. Did you do what I suggested above? What happened?

    Tom,

No luck. I tried opening the sequence with Option and re-launching with Shift- both methods left the same result. The sequence doesn’t even have any plug-ins applied.

I don’t think it’s the sequence but rather something with the transfer of the program to the new computer.

So the application didn’t open at all? Try trashing your preferences and see if you can launch the application from the Dock or wherever. Not a project.

    Tom,

I trashed the prefs, along with the .plist and cache files– same problem.

If I want to re-install, how far back do I have to go with the install disks (I have everything from version 1 on).

Use FCS Remover to uninstall the application, and then install from the discs. You don’t need to install any earlier versions. If it’s an upgrade install disc you’ll be asked for the original serial number.

    Tom,

I bought the FCS Maintenance Pack and narrowed it down to a set of Digital Anarchy plug-ins. Once I disabled them, all was well. Thanks for the info and all your help.
