First thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions on how to do this.

Another method is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP & FCE.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

I recently discovered this bug too. On my system it happens when I switch keyboard layout in the keyboard input menu.

I do this often when I work in AfterEffects in conjunction with FCP… I must use the US layout for aftereffects to use all the nice shortcuts. Flushing prefs doesn’t change anything.

I had this problem several weeks or months back. When I tried to use undo, it would separate linked clips and toss the fragments around the timeline. It made for very messy editing for a while. I trashed render files that were associated with the timeline and that seemed to clear it up. Undo works fine now.
