  Understanding .MOD files and their size

  Hi all,

  I’m pretty new to video-editing.
  I have some .MOD videos on my HardDrive. Renaming them into .MPEG files, they appear to be 720×576 sized, MPEG-2, AC3.
  Importing the .MPEG files into Final Cut I lose the audio track (why is this?). To avoid the problem, I used ffmpegx to convert them into .DV (same size).

  In both cases, the videos look very bad, as subjected to an horizontal shrink.
  I’ve noticed that, using HandBrake to convert the original .MOD files into .MP4 files and leaving the default settings for size, the output videos are 1024×576 that look much much better.

  Could someone explain me why all this happens? Is the information about the .MOD files somehow not accurate? Does that depends on the 4:3/16:9 format? Is something related to the “anamorphic” setting?
  I definitely need a clarification about all this.
