Can I view a 16×9 signal undistorted by using a standard 4:3 monitor switched to underscan? Will it give me the undistorted anamorphic image with letterboxing? Or do I need a monitor that is switchable to 4:3? I am using a DVX100 with an anamorphic adaptor. Editing in Vegas, but my monitor does not have an underscan mode.

To view anamorphic signals, you will need a monitor capable of switching to 16:9. Simple underscan will not do what you need.
