    Hey guys,

So yesterday, while I was finishing my web page design, (’cause yeah, I design images/web pages in AE), I was confronted to a problem. I just couldn’t believe it. How…

To make it short, my question is: Is there a way to underline text in Ater Effects?

I don’t get it – I’ve worked in AE for 4-5 years. I searched in the COW Archives; no answer. Could it be? Is AE incapable of underlining text? Or is it just me?

PS. You’re probably wondering why I want to underline text in AE when I’ll end up writing it in Dreamweaver. It’s simple; it’s a draft for a client, so he can see what it will look like. Anyhow, underlining text seems like a very basic thing to do for AE, right?

    Thanks for your time guys.

You will need to create the underline as a separate text or graphic element.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Thanks, even if that’s what I did before posting on COW.

I noticed this only the other day…very strange omission, especially when all the other text options from Photoshop made it over to AE…why not this one?!? Have you tried setting the type in PS and importing>convert to editable text?

Hope you don’t mind me asking…why do you use AE to design stills for the web, rather than something like Photoshop or Fireworks?

The fastest way to do this in AE is create the line of text, press Enter for the next line, create a bunch of underline characters (“_”) and set a basline shift to match the first line.

I know this is an old thread, but another tip that may help if the text you want to underline is more than one line, is duplicate the layer, erase the text and add spaces and underline characters as needed. Parent the new to the text and you are good to go.

Old threads can be good threads; thanks Amit, does indeed work.
