  • Uncropping an imported still image.

    Posted by Leo July on October 10, 2007 at 3:56 pm

    When I import a still JPEG image into 1.5 which on the screen measures 7.25 inches by 10.5 inches (take that as the ratio) 1.5 crops the image about 10%.

    1.5 will not let me UNcrop the image to its full 7X10 size. How do I uncrop this image to full size?
    After importing the image I tried using the crop function in Effects et al. Nothing works.

    You can never uncrop. You may try interpolate as square pixels.

    I don’t know anything about interpolating.

    None of the 1.5 documentation I’ve read says this software crops JPEG images when they’re being imported. Why does 1.5 crop images? The documentation leads one to believe images are imported at full frame dimensions.

    It does not crop the images if you use the correct size and PAR. 640×480 with PAR 1.0. It makes no sense to identify the size in inches, as you did.

    The problem is that your image is not 4:3 aspect ratio like your project and does not fit without changing the scale and then will have black bars top and bottom..
    Open the image in Photoshop, constrain the crop tool to 4 x 3 and crop your still for Premiere.

    I don’t know how to contrain the crop tool to 4 X 3 in Photoshop, though I know how to invoke the crop tool. Nor do I know what PAR 1.0 refers to or how to adjust the image to 640 X 480.

    I appreciate your help.

    Slight correction since I posted the previous message a few minutes ago I discovered how to reset the aspect ratio to 4 X 3. After I did this and saved it I again imported the new constrained 4 X 3 image into 1.5 Premiere STILL crops the image severely. Constraining the image in Photoshop does nothing to fix the problem.

    Premiere is probably cropping because;
    The image is larger than your Project settings. You can adjust the size by selecting the still in the timeline and clicking “Motion” in the Effects Control palette. Then you can resize the image by click/drag in the Program window.

    This method solves about 90% of the problem. The image still has two thin black lines, one at the top and one at the bottom. Recall that I resized the image in Photoshop to 4X3. Why, then, does it not fill the frame in 1.5?

    Its sounds like you may have the “Scale clips to project settings” box checked. If so Premier will automatically try to conform your image/clip to current project size. Go to Project> Project settings> General. Make sure the check box is not checked. If that doesn’t solve the problem you can tweak the way Premier conforms the image by going to File> Intrepret fotage. Make sure to select the image in your project folder first or the intrepret footage option will be greyed out.
