Uncompressed SD/HD from powerbook?
Hello all,
I’m a newbie to this site but I find the forum a great help and would like to thank everyone that post such helpful questions and answers.
I do music video work and I’m finally making the jump from 16mm/35mm to Hdv production (film budgets are getting harder to find). My question relates to outputting the final HDV edit. Exactly how can I go from my final edit to an uncompressed SD and/or HD output/export to Digibeta/D5/HDCAM using a Powerbook G4. In all likelyhood the uncompressed SD would be my final output format ,most music video shows/channels still only offer SD broadcast, but I would still like to know if its possible to export to both uncomped formats via the powerbook.

Uncompressed SD? Possible. The AJA I/O connects vie firewire and you can get PCMCIA SATA adaptors, or even use a G-raid for Uncompressed 8-bit and ONE stream of uncompressed 10bit. But if you use firewire get an PCMCIA firewire adaptor.
Uncompressed HD? Uhm…since you need an HD capture card AND High speed SATA Raid or Fibrechannel Raid I don’t see how this is possible. Because while there are external PCI boxes that you can get to install HD capture cards into that then plug into your PCMCIA slot…that slot is now taken and you cannot connect any drives to it.
No…get a Tower.

SD works fine with either a small RAID via FW800 or with an S-ATA adaptor in the card slot. HD uncompressed is currently not really possible on a laptop. You’ll have to wait 2 or 3 years 😉

Would be possible to export an uncompressed HD quicktime file via Compressor to a SATA drive (connected via the powerbooks PCMCIA card slot) and then take that drive to an online facility to output to tape?

Sure. Or put it on a firewire drive. They’ll most likely transfer to their drives for the output anyway.
