    Hi folks

We have been using KONA 2 cards for a while now and on several occasions we have seen strange video on output to DVD.

Our work flow is as follows:

Capture and Edit SD uncompressed 8bit and export from FCP with QuickTime Conversion or via Compressor, to an M2V file. The export in point can be at the beginning of the timeline or at the first frame of video or even in the middle of the timeline. The M2V file looks fine in DVDStudio Pro but when we burn it to a DVD and play back on an NTSC-TV the video appears torn, like a field dominance order problem. Horizontal or vertical motion is very ragged. We have even tired to export and 8 bit move, bring that into compressor and make the M2V from there, with the same results. When we export timeline to a DV file and make the M2V from that DV the resulting M2V is defective. When we play the timeline out to a DV tape and then capture that back into FCP that DV file exports perfectly to the M2V.

The problem appears to be within the FCP uncompressed time line of KONA video and QuickTime’s conversion of it to M2V. We found that if we place a FCP Audio/Video Slug before the beginning of our KONA video and put the export inpoint within the FCP Slug, the resulting M2V file is fine.

Has anyone else seen this and is there a better way to fix it?

    Thanks

    Fred

I know exactly what you are talking about! I have found two issues with compressor and uncompressed footage (although I am not sure that they are limited to uncompressed).

    1. The VBR encode looks like crap. I am not sure if this has been fixed, but a know issues with compressor 2. The CBR works great.
    2. The field dominance is reversed with the presets. It has been so long since I have messed with this that I don’t exactly remember what the actual issue was. But I knew exactly what you are talking about and I wanted to get back to you. I can tell you, however, the workflow that I use to avoid this issue. When I need to make a DVD I export the timeline to a Final Cut Pro Movie (I do not make it self contained). Then I import it into compressor and used the CBR preset that I created. You can make it to you specifications, but make sure that you have the field dominance to lower instead of auto. Then I would test the DVD on a regular CRT monitor to make sure everything is working correctly.

    Hope that helps.
