March 16, 2009 at 9:10 pm[Mark Spano] “Gary, when you say it’s a standard 2vuy codec, where can that be found? I assume some codec packages exist for PC independently of pro video software?”
standard 2vuy codecs are the basis for all editing platforms, the simplest place to get them for cross platform delivery would be the AJA website
AJA Windows QuickTime™ Codec v1.1.1 <https://www.aja.com/ajashare/AJASoftwareCodec111Setup.exe>
the bigger issue I believe is that you are trying to send .Mov files to windows users that vehemently dislike macs, so it is incumbent on you to properly provide the content as they need or request it.
This is fundamentally no different that a Tape based delivery. if you give your client the wrong format on tape- it gets kicked back from QC and you start over. This is no different as you are finding out, if they ask for AVI files give them AVI, there are plenty of tools that do this conversion on the fly- look at Telestream Episode or Pipeline to start, since they handle the widest variety of formats available for transcoding.

March 17, 2009 at 3:08 am[Mark Spano] “It’s these scenarios where I’ll get the call from the ‘right’ person *after* the delivery/deadline has been made, only to find out what was needed and what had been misinterpreted or not relayed through the client to the producer etc. etc… Even then, the ‘right’ person often doesn’t understand enough about what they’re doing to ask for the right thing.”
You just confirmed my point! Save yourself the grief by INSISTING that you speak with the person who
you’re delivering to. Trust me. You’re actually SAVING time by doing this.A five minute phone call can save hours of “redo” time. In my book, that’s time well spent.

I would say that depends on the definition of cross-platform.
Since it is my understanding that Sheer like Cineform is not technically able to capture on both platforms, no hardware captures to AVCi except panasonic hardware, this is a tough issue.
Uncompressed files are cross platform if you understand the needs of the other platform. Animation codec files play very well on both platforms, but are harded to playback than some compressed formats.
Photo-Jpeg @ 75% quality are some of the easiest files to use in X-platform projects, DPX or Targas also work very well.
But it is more about creating files that conform to the needs of the clients, just as you do with Tape, While you may want your client to use something out of the mainstream, many clients will not pay the additional price to have your tool set on their desk.

The truth is that I have no idea about how works for capturing with a PC.
With Mac works great when capturing with an AJA or BM.

October 27, 2009 at 10:09 pmWithout FCP, you won’t have the uncompressed codecs. However, you may have success installing AJA’s codecs.
