On the advice of a post facility who’s going to do a DigiBeta tape for me from an FCP project I exported a 20 min. film originally in DCVPRO 50/ 23.98 FPS/ 16×9 to an uncompressed format = 8 bit 4:2:2 from FCP – for this “output to tape” so I can just take my drive with me to the facility. The exported QT comes out really weird, messed up, green bands, it’s 29.97 FPS instead of the 23.98 FPS it’ supposed to be, and now 16 minutes long instead of 20 minutes ( I guess this is the frame rate difference.) I’m exporting the sequence as “Quicktime movie”, “make it self-contained”, audio and video with the preset “uncompressed 8-bit NTSC 48 KHZ” option. Any idea why? Should I be using “quicktime conversion” to export? Anybody else have had a problem with this / or this is not a problem but a feature in FCP? 🙂 Does the frame size difference mess things up? 720×486 vs. 720×480?

I’ve tried playback both in FCP and QT – same results. Also, since it’s also an option in FCP, is there any reason why I should NOT export a 10 bit version instead of an 8 bit?

Is this the best way to handle this? Any advice would be much appreciated.

You have any idea why? Thanks, miklos

the frame rate you’re talking about won’t hurt it, but, I question the way you captured the footage. DVCPRO 50 is an SD standard but you say you shot it with 16:9 24p settings. did you use the DVCPRO HD codec to capture to? was it shot in 24p or 24p advanced? There may be breaks in your workflow that is causing the problem.

It seems to work if I export using “Quicktime conversion” and selecting the “Uncompressed 8-bit 48 K” preset under Quicktime options. So, I’m answering my own question I guess: the straight out export using “Export>Quicktime Movie” would result in a mess, but using the method as above it works, the frame rate and 16×9 anamorphic is retained – the only thing I notice is two 3 pixel black lines on left and right side of the frame. I guess that’s the 720×486 frame size (which is the format for uncompressed 8-bit video) vs. the original 720×480 frame size of DVCPRO. It should work fine.

On your other note: thanks for you attempt to help, but no, there are no breaks in my workflow, it was captured correctly. FYI: It was shot with the Panasonic SDX900 using DVCPRO 50 in 16×9 mode and 24P.

    cheers
