uncompressed 422 looking dark in After Effects
An odd problem. We have an AJA IO box connected via SDI to a digibeta into a G5 w/FCP4.5 on OSX 10.4. We capture using the FCP Uncompressed 422 codec. When I open the quicktime the footage looks bright. Pretty much the same as it looks in FCP. If I bring it into After Effects in gets very dark and slightly blue. If I export straight out of quicktime the footage gets that same dark appearance. My intitial thought was a 0-255 vs 16-235 issue. However when I bring it into After Effects on a machine running OS X 10.3.9 I don’t have the same problem. The footage looks almost exactly like the original quicktime. Both machine are running QT 7.0.4. I am wondering if there is an issue with 10.4 and the Uncompressed 422 codec.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welll, there is a well known gamma shift issue when the Blackmagic codecs are installed. Is is possible that you have them on one of your machines? If so, I wouldn’t necessarilly say “remove them” (because they were working on a fix last time I checked) but rather I’d say you visit the Cow’s Decklink forum and look for answers there.
If you don’t have the Blackmagic codecs, then I have no idea 🙂

Yes, the Apple Uncompressed 4:2:2 Codec introduces a gamma shift in OS 10.4. This has been an issue since the release of Tiger, and because Apple are pushing to make their own codec the ONLY one used in 10.4, replacing proprietry codecs from AJA, Blackmagic etc., it is a HUGE problem for professionals using 10bit material. My facility has been forced to back-grade all systems to 10.3.9 until Apple address this issue.

Having just seen Adolfo’s post, I’ll add that I AM using Blackmagic codecs and hardware. Perhaps this is not inherently an Apple issue…?

From what I’ve seen is neither an Apple issue nor a Blackmagic issue, but rather a conflict between both. It could be solved by now, and I wouldn’t know because frankly, Blackmagic codec is mostly useful for cross-platofrm workflows. I don’t have it in my system. I know they were working on it.
