I am making a recommendation on a system for an upcoming project. What I would like to be able to do is have the editors system and the assistants system connected to the same storage. All the assistant station will be doing is logging/and capturing material to the storage system. What recomendations can anyone make for a set up that is manageable by someone without much NAS experience and is in the sub $10,000 range with 6+ Tb usuable storage and capable of playing back multiple streams of Pro Rez?

SAN…not NAS. NAS is for businesses and office shared stuff. SAN, Shared Area Network, is for video.

That’s a low price point…you might have to look a tad higher. And multiple streams of PRORES? How many is multiple? Most of these you might get 2 or 3…maybe. High end formats are not the strong suit of Shared Storage Solutions.

EditShare is something to look into. I like the way they do things. Then there is MetaSAN and SANmp. We use XSAN on an XSERVE, but that is pretty expensive and not to easy to deal with, unless you have SAN experience.

    Hi
A search to a post of a few days ago would have found this – which is very interesting, for a more compressed format 😉

Maybe I am overguning this. Basically I want one system for the editor and one for the assistant. The editors system needs/ will be a very nice Kona3/FCP6 system. I was thinking of going with the Dulce Pro DQ or Caldigit HD Pro storage system. For the assistant station I basically need a way to log and capture and get the media to the editors system. I know I could sneaker net it but was hoping to find a way a little more elegant.

    Thanks

If you have two machines, you can do a simple GIGe network. Connect one machine to the Caldigit or Dulce RAID, then in the SHARING preference in the System Settings, enable sharing. Then on the other machine you can mount the RAID drive and you should both be able to use it…a couple of streams of playback.

Thanks Shane, this sounds more like what we would need. One other quick question if you don’t mind. Could I capture on the assistant station from HDV to Pro-Rez HD 1080i across the GigE to the Dulce or CalDigit while the editor is working?

I doubt that it can do that. In that case you might need to set the assistant on the machine with the direct connection and you on the other one.

Mind you this is VERY low end networking, and is far from ideal. If you want something stable for your professional environment, you’re gonna need to get a proper SAN solution.
