  • Unable to render footage with .dv extension

I have been given footage with a *.DV extension. It came from a broadcast van at an event that needs to be edited down to a shorter length. It edits fine in SVP11, but when I try to render it out, after a while the vision on the track with the .DV footage just drops out to black. The titles and watermarks are still there. The vision sometimes returns. If I render again, it happens in a different spot.

It happens with the latest version of SVP11 (x32 and x64), as well as the earlier SVP11 releases. I do not have any CODEC packs installed.

Any clue as to what is going on?

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

I would use a tool like MediaInfo or GSpot to see what codec the file uses. I’m assuming it uses the DV codec which Vegas normally expects in an AVI container. You might try changing the extension to .AVI and see of Vegas can process it easier. Sometimes this works if the container is really AVI but some program used an alternate extension. (just something to try)

My experience has taught me that a file with that extension comes from a Mac and I’m surprised that Vegas could read it.
Follow John’s suggestions and, if that doesn’t help, Google may be your only friend 🙁

The footage is part of a multicam shoot and has been heaviliy edited using infiniticam. Can I rename, swap or replace the media as you suggested and still preserve the edit, or will i have to start over?

[Nigel O'Neill] “Can I rename, swap or replace the media as you suggested and still preserve the edit, or will i have to start over?”

You can swap the media in the Project Media by right-clicking on the media and selecting Replace…. This will replace the media anywhere that it’s used on the timeline.

I would do a test on a clean project first. Rename the file, drop it into a new project and see if you can render it. If you get the same problem then there is no reason to mess with your original project.
