Unable to rename XDCam disc in FC7
We’ve just bought a new MacPro and installed FC7 in order to log material from a XDCam-shooting. This is our first experience with FC and XDCam as a unit.
The problem is that the discs pop up as “untitled” on the Mac, and we simply can’t find a way to rename them. In order to log properly we need unique reel names for the discs. When we try some of our old Sony-discs from previous projects (edited in Avid), there’s no problem – but with these Fuji discs – no. How can that be? Can it be something the camera operator has done while shooting, or might there be a problem with Fuji discs?
Any help would be appreciated.

A few more details please. Which OS version? What are using to access the XDCAM HD disc? PDW-U1 or a deck in FAM mode? If you are using the U1, which version of the U1 utility is installed? Which version of XDCAM Transfer is installed?

We’re using the PDW-1500 and just this minute upgraded to XDCam transfer 2.10.0. And now it works, appearantly. Sorry for bothering you.

But it is interesting though. We could rename Sony and TDK discs before the upgrade. But not Fuji??? I mean, shouldn’t an XDCam disc just be an XDCam disc – no matter the brand?

I don’t think it’s neccessary to actually rename the original card for batching. Instead just create a unique top folder on your hard drive, copy the contents to it and use that as your Log and Transfer source. It’s not like you’ll ever go back to that exact card for another batch as it will have long since be recycled.

Going back to the discs is exactly what we’ll have to do. We’re logging for the editor, and when he’s finished, we’ll online with a little help from an edl, and then in to color grading etc. So we’re keeping the discs for online soon as the editing’s done.

Yeah but um why-? Whether the media is on disc or on hard drive- does it really ultimately matter? It’s just 1s and 0s. Why not consider the discs your vaulted archive and work from local clones of each disc on one hard drive. That would save you oddles of time and you needn’t worry about this naming issue.
