  • unable to preview clips in archive window before import with 7d footage

Posted by Db Rabinowitz on June 25, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Just making the transition to fcp X and while I’ve been able to import an entire card of 7d footage I’m unable to preview the clips when I try and open an archive before I import. I’ve copied the entire folder from my card to another drive (not my editing drive) and when I try to open it as an archive I get this message: “fcp x test movie roll 1 (folder name)” contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.

I’ve done some searching and read that I can’t have jpegs on the card with .mov files so I trashed those. I actually didn’t know what the thm files were (now I do) and tried trashing them and ironically I was able to preview and import files but not transcode the media to pro res. I started from the beginning again and the same problem/error message arises.
    Help! Please advise.
    thanks
    db

FCX doesn’t support the file structure of Canon 7D as a camera archive. You have to import the .mov files directly, not from camera archive.

So I’m unable to preview 7d clips before import? In other words I’ll always have to import the entire content of the card rather then be selective?

Not entirely true. You don’t get the nice window full of thumbnails that are scrubbable. But, you can use the tools built into OSX to preview clips. Basically, you are looking at a Finder view of your files. So, you can use Finder viewing tools, such as Quicklook. For example, you can highlight a certain .mov file and hit the spacebar to do a Quicklook at that file. Because it’s a movie, the Quicklook plays the movie for you. When you hit spacebar again, the Quicklook goes away. Or, you can view the files as thumbnails or even use the Coverflow view. You’re using the power of OSX to aid in the previewing of material for import to FCX.

Thank you for clearing that up. I felt like I was doing something wrong for the past few days. Now I know.

If you have Bridge installed from Adobe you can use that as a preview app.

I do have bridge but have never used it. Is there a quick explanation of how I’d go about using it to preview my clips?

    Thanks

I think I just figured it out. The thing is, with either this work-around or the previous suggestion using Finder, while I can preview the clip I’m unable to set in/out points and be selective within fcp x before importing. Such is life.

    Thanks again.

Simply copy your 7D .mov files to a new folder – call it 7D video or something clever like that – then go to FCPX and hit import from camera. Click on open camera archive, select the folder you created and you’re off to the races. Just remember to leave the .thm files behind and copy only the .mov’s.
