Unable to open large project
Posted by Robobonanza on September 1, 2007 at 11:38 amI recently used Software Update to go from Final Cut 5.0.3 to 5.0.4–since doing this I have not been able to open a large project. The application reads my bins/files, however, crashes while ‘preparing video for display.’ I have uninstalled Final Cut and upgraded to 5.1.4 but the problem remains. I have also tried trashing preferences and opening auto save files with the same result. ideas?

September 1, 2007 at 3:50 pmTrash your preferences. Repair permissions and launch the application. Does it open?
If your media is on an external drive, unmount the drive and then launch the project. Does the project open without the media?
Is yes, trash all your render files and try to open the project. If it still fails look through all your media to se if there is a file with a generic, non-QuickTime icon. If so, trash it.
There are other tricks you can do to try to isolate a corrupted media file. In worst case you might have to recapture the project.
All the best,

September 1, 2007 at 9:21 pmI have trashed my preferences and repaired permission–this all happened after an update if that helps. I’ve made all of the clips offline/disconnected the drives but my project still won’t pass ‘preparing video for display.’ I can see my clips/bins while ‘updating project file.’ I just trashed all my render files and the application still quits. How do I isolate the corrupted media file?

September 1, 2007 at 9:27 pmFirst, does the application launch by itself? That was the first question. After you’ve trashed preferences and repaired permissions. Will the application launch?
If all the media is offline there should be no video for it to prepare to display. Are there large graphics files like image files in the sequence that might be loading? Are there text files in there? Maybe a corrupted font?
All the best,
Tom

September 1, 2007 at 9:36 pmthe application will launch on its own or with other projects. there are no large graphic files or fonts. if all the media is offline, could it still crash due to a corrupt sequence?

September 1, 2007 at 10:00 pmA sequence isn’t a separate object it’s just a line of text in the project file. It possible that it could be corrupted, but I can’t see why it would be corrupted going back through the vault and suddenly fail now and not when it became corrupted. On the other hand, if something the sequence is trying to access is corrupted then earlier versions all trying to access the same file or object would also be corrupted, which sort of describes what’s happening to you.
Did you trash your thumbnail and waveform caches? Keep trying it with the media and everything offline.
All the best,
Tom

September 2, 2007 at 12:00 pmTry activating Caps Lock so that the screen does not attempt to render when it opens. If your project file is on an external drive, try copying it onto your desktop and opening it through the Open dialog after starting FCP from scratch.
Try deleting all of your render files. Upgrading to 5.1.4 is almost a whole number increment in terms of some of the revised features, so I would not be surprised if there were problems with 5.0.x media.
