  • Unable to import JPEG into AE – Error 86 :: 1 (Bad Header)

Posted by Anthony Harvey on January 17, 2018 at 8:07 pm

    Hello,

I’m trying to import a JPEG file into the latest After Effects CC but I keep receiving the error:
‘The source file has bad header. Please check that it is a valid file. (86 :: 1)’

    JPEG size is 16078 x 22000
Could it be that the file is too big?

    Computer Specs.
    iMac OSX Yosemite Ver 10.10.5
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    12GB Ram
ATI Radeon HD 256MB Graphics Card

Any help would be great! Thank you.

[Anthony Harvey] “Could it be that the file is too big?”

Yes, but if you open in Photoshop and save as some other format (maybe PSD), it should work fine.

Just note that’s a really big image. If you don’t actually need all those pixels in Ae, you might consider cropping or scaling in Photoshop to lighten the load on Ae a bit.

Hi all, reviving this thread since I just hit this issue for the first time, and I had 28000 images in a sequence that threw this error. In case my solution is useful for others — I found the batch conversion feature in Irfan View worked great. Just “converted” them to JPEG (they were already JPEGs, but whatever) and they worked great in AE.
