  • Unable to Cross fade audio

Posted by Tony Bartolucci on November 11, 2007 at 2:29 am

I have two audio clips, both have been nested, the first audio clip at the beginning of my time line and the second one right after it…

I cannot apply a cross fade to the end of the first audio clip or the second, but I can apply it to the beginning of the first and the beginning of the second. Whats going on here? I just want to cross fade between the two so I want the effect in the center of the cut, any help?

One of two things are likely:

    A. The first clip ENDS and there is not enough “handle” to overlap into the next clip.

    B. There is a glitch in FCP.
In which case, if you Trash the FCP Preferences, the feature should return to normal.

    I’m really thinking “A” here.
Try laying the second clip on a separate audio track and fade it using key-frames.

If they have both been nested then there is a good chance that the problem is there isn’t enough handle room on either side of the edit to allow for a cross fade. The solution is to open up the nested sequence and create some handles at the beginning and end of both clips (how much handle you create depends entirely on how long you plan for the cross fade to be). Once you have done that, you’re going to have to slip your nested clips in the original sequence accordingly to make it match up again like it should. Once you do that you’ve essentially added handles and this should allow you to crossfade to your heart’s content.

OK its definally that there is not enough of the clip to put the transition on. What I dont understand is how do I extend the clip and still have it cut and the next clip come on where I want them to?

I’ve gone into the nested audio sequence and extended it then I go back out to my main time line and extend that but then it cuts off part of my next audio clip…?

Just fade DOWN the first clip with an audio fade effect or key-frames.

Then fade UP the second clip with its own separate audio fade effect or key-frames.
