Don’t use the standard text generator. Try Boris Title 3D instead. It’s in your Generators menu. Problems with Boris? Repost.

thanks, im aware of boris’s title 3d, but it hasnt really impressed me too much. id like to be able to use the basic text for simple things like a slate and whatever else.

As Kevin says Boris 3D really is the one to use. My guess is that you may not be using it correctly. Take a few minutes to read the online help, as it is vastly superior and actually much easier than the basic text generator. BTW, some fonts are simply not available to the text generators and they will not change when you attempt to do so.

Regular text generators are dead to man, DEAD. 😉 Haven’t used ’em since FCP 2.

Regardless of how krappy they are, and how much you really should avoid them nowadays they should still work for down and dirty junk.

“When animals attack”….trash yer prefs then post back.

its irritating clicking on a drop down menu and having nothing drop down, and as i’d hate to continue the controversey, but if i need good looking text, i believe it does not lie within boris or even FCP for that matter. having no Z axis and limited lighting effects does not allow for too much creative text designing in my opinion. but hey, to each their own. thanks for the help guys

If no fonts show up, it’s pointing to a corruption of some kind. Again, trash your prefs and let us know if your fonts return. Let us know.

Did you see if any of your other apps are having this issue with your fonts?
    I’d check that out.

If everything else seems good, you might try the following in order and one at a time:

Repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utilities
Rebuild your directory with Disk Warrior
    Reinstall FCP
    Do a “Clean” Re-install of OS X

    If all else fails:
Do a full erase and install of OS X
    Reinstall FCP

lol, ok well i feel slightly stupid. But at least i figured out why it was doing that. from the right, i have my cinema display, another 17″ next to it, then my ntsc monitor (through blackmagic card). i use the far left side of the 17″ for the viewer and right next to it for the canvas, and the cinema display for everything else. well i guess because the viewer is right next to the ntsc monitor, when i drop down the font menu, it drops down, but on the ntsc monitor right next to it. but because the monitor is displaying the preview, the font list shows up behind it. guess i need to to some window rearranging. thanks for the help
