  • Unable to capture timecode via Firewire

Posted by Duncan Hill on March 16, 2010 at 3:05 pm

I am captureing HDV footage from a Z1 camera via a firewire to FCP on a mac book pro.

I am capturing the footage using a HDV 1080i50 sequence setting and the apple intermediate codec. All is fine up to this point.

Once I capture the footage, each clip I capture, the timecode begins at 00:00:00:00, even though the time code on the tape says completely differently (I have shot each reel starting with a different number ie 01:00:00:00, 02:00:00:00 etc).

Do I need a special firewire cable to transfer HDV material? (is there too much information for my standard firewire cable to cope with?) or is there a simple setting in FCP that I’m missing?

    Any help is much appreciated.

Also, I can’t use log an capture in HDV mode, I can’t assign tape numbers etc, when i hit log and capture it just automatically captures the footsge without me controlling the deck and assigning tape numbers as i would in SD.

    thanks again for any help…

If you transcode to AIC the timecode is lost. You only retain timecode if you capture native HDV.

There is no logging function if you transcode to AIC, only with native HDV capture.

    All the best,

Thank you for enlightning me Tom. I must say, what a terrible feature, what is that point in that?

Next problem…When I try to capture native HD, my FCP crashes completely with an error sayng FCP quit unexpectedly. Any ideas on how I might be able to fix this problem? I am using FCP version 5.

    Thanks again!

    Trash your preferences.

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything’s connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you’re using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime you are using.

    All the best,

    Duncan,

AIC is essentially a dead “legacy” codec that should no longer be used. It was designed years ago when HDV was first came out and there was no native HDV editing. Today, we capture and edit HDV either as native HDV or ProRes. Both techniques capture timecode off the tape.

If you wish to capture HDV as ProRes on the fly via firewire, read the following tutorial: https://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php

After you trashed your preferences what happened? How much space left on the internal drive?

thanks for the update David. I think the link you sent me, as good as it is, is for a later version of FCP, I have version 5 and can’t find anything regarding a Pro res setting…
