    Hello

I am trying to burn a DVD disk using iDVD but I am unable to even intialize the disk.

I insert a blank DVD disk and receive the initialize prompt. I titled the disk then selected the Mac OS Standard 4.3 GB format. I clicked initialize.

I received the following: “Initializing will erase all informaiton on this disk.” I clicked continue.

Nest, I received a promopt stating “Disk initialization failed because disk is locked!” The disk is then ejected.

I have tried 3 different blank DVD disks – one Fujifilm DVD-R and two Apple DVD-R disks.

I also tried a test selecting the Mac OS Extended 4.3 GB format. A screen popped up showing numbers increasing in the hundreds of thousands, then the computer locked up and I had to reboot.

I am able to perform a regular CD back-up, so it appears to be only the DVD drive that isn’t operating properly.

Can someone please shed some light on this situation?

    Thanks
    Howie

Have you tried clicking the Burn button in iDVD, and then inserting the disc when prompted, instead of inserting the disc from the operating system (Finder)?

When trying to burn a DVD from iTunes the following happens:

I click the Burn DVD button in iTunes and recive the following prompts:

    “Checking for DVD writer.”

    The drive opens.

“Please insert the DVD you wish to write to…” With only the cancel button to click.

    I insert the disk.

A few seconds later I receive the following:

“This disk is unreadable by this Computer. Do you want to initialize the disk?” It asks to name the disc and choose one of 3 formats: 1. standard CD, ITunes or MP3 CD. There are 2 options to click: 1. Eject or 2. Initialize.

    More information:

First of all, thank you all for responding to my post. Now, on to your questions.

I’m using a Power Mac G4 733 with the Pioneer Superdrive, OS 9.2.2 and iDVD Version 1.

    Thanks for responding.

FYI, I meant to write iDVD not iTunes.

Here’s some tips from Apple tech info #58819 (which should apply to iDVD 1), perhaps they might help:

    Tips for burning a DVD

To prevent errors when burning a DVD disc, do the following:
    Quit all other open applications.
Set the Energy Saver control panel so that your hard disk will not go to sleep. (Open the Energy Saver control panel, and set the system sleep slider to Never.)
Turn off AppleTalk, File Sharing, and Web Sharing in their respective control panels.
Make sure that system activities such as hard disk indexing or network time server access are turned off. Information on turning off hard disk indexing and network time server access is available in Mac Help. Click on the desktop and then choose Mac Help from the Help menu.
