I have a Davini Resolve, with a Decklink card set to Video Levels.
The SDI output is monitored with an Ultrascope, which is set to show errors according to EBU-R 103 standards.

When grading in Resolve I wasn’t able to generate error messages like “Luma Under” or “Luma Over”. Also if I render out a DPX sequence I won’t see any problem.
But if I render out a Prores (video level) and import it to Adobe Premiere, Ultrascope will show “Luma Under -4 IRE” or “Luma Over 104 IRE” error messages.

Now here comes the strange part. If I import this Prores back to Resolve, it won’t show any error messages.
Also if I import the DPX sequence to Premiere, it won’t show the errors. But as soon as I render something compressed out – like prores, or MXF – it will show these errors.

    Am I doing something wrong?
If not, how can I be sure that I won’t export luma under, and luma over values from Premiere?

    thanks.

To ma that sounds like you have a configuration error.
Or even more likely, two of them and together they work if you make a render mistake.
Can we ask you to render 5 sec of ProRes and a corresponding DPX frame, export the project setting and zip it all and upload it to YouSendit ?
i will have a look and investigate further then.

Thanks Sascha, currently I’m not allowed to give this one out, but I did the test with another video, same thing found. (Only the original video was much more contrasty, throwing Luma Over issues too)

    So:
    – Davinci Resolve video output is set up like this: https://d.pr/i/VrzG
    – monitoring the Davinci output looks like this on the Ultrascope: https://d.pr/i/oPB7 (Error log started, no errors)
I exported a video level Prores422 mov, and a full range DPX, and brought them into Premiere (tested in Smoke, and Avid too…)

    – Prores looks like this on the internal waveform in Premiere: https://d.pr/i/AF8w and looks like this monitored with Ultrascope https://d.pr/i/XTdL (errors found)
    – DPX looks like thin on the internal waveform in Premiere: https://d.pr/i/WN5M and looks like this monitored with Ultrascope https://d.pr/i/6Kxs (no errors)

Now here comes the strange part. If I export an MXF from the DPX – which was flawless – it looks like this on the internal: https://d.pr/i/H3UH and on Ultrascope: https://d.pr/i/K71h (errors again)
If I export out a Prores from the DPX, the same thing happen – played back in Premiere, Avid, or Blackmagic Media Express.

If I bring back the exported MXF to Resolve, Ultrascope finds no errors at all.
Here are all the files: https://we.tl/1frLjykUZq

This can be a Premiere issue, but then what kind of finishing tool should I use?

    thanks
