  • Ultimate S MultiCam vs Vegas 11 MultiCam?

Posted by James Houghtaling on May 23, 2012 at 3:21 am

    That is the question.
Just back from my music video shoot Sunday. Set up in a dirty factory, made the set from black curtains, and now I have multiple takes of the song using various camera angles – at least 5 main takes and some partial takes that I’ll need to edit under the master audio track.
I’ve used Ultimate S multi cam plug in before with 3 takes but it only accepts up to 4 cameras as far as I can tell. Never used Vegas’ built in multicam but enabled it to see what it looked like. Read through some of the help files but can’t figure out how to bring in the other tracks as cameras – right now it only gives me one camera in the preview window.

So who has an opinion on the better tool? And can either handle more than 4 cameras? If no, what would be the best workflow? I’m thinking maybe I’ll have to do the 4 cameras then add the rest manually?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Jim

Vegas MultiCam has no limit on the number of camera angles. It is fairly easy.
The Help file contains all the information you need to start using it (open Help and go to Using Vegas Software > Multicamera editing)

    Thanks for the comments.
I’ve searched the Vegas help file and all they tell you is to enable multicam and all tracks should show up.

I have 6 tracks synchronized under the master audio track but when I enable multicam I only see one track (the top one) in my preview monitor (with the blue multicam border and the number 1 in the bottom right corner). I don’t get a multicam view showing all 6 tracks like it shows in the help file and I cannot find anyway to toggle other tracks into view either. Further, I see no additional “takes” on any of the tracks.

I must be missing something simple that defines which tracks are included in the multcam editing. A step by step procedure would be helpful.

OK I guess I should have searched the all knowing Youtube first. Here’s the answer to my question right up front in this video…. you select all tracks you want and under tools, multicamer you “Create multicam Track” which combines all the tracks into one track with multiple takes and shows them on the preview screen. Now I guess I have no excuse not to get this video done…. thanks guys.

I was going to suggest Vasst Infiniticam which handles 99 video tracks. I don’t use Vegas’ multicam because I lose event level control. I just like to see all the tracks laid out always. It makes it easier to tweak and fine tune cuts, which Vegas’ built-in multicam makes nigh impossible to do.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

I’m going to give Vegas a try. I don’t have the infiniticam, only Ultimate S. But I’ve been playing with the Vegas multicam and after setting your initial cuts, you can revert back to individual tracks where the unused events are muted. So you can tweak the edit placements or “takes” to change cameras. In the video I posted you can see an example of that as well. Thanks for the suggestion.
