    I’m looking to do some titles that look like they are typed on-screen with a cursor in front of each letter before it’s revealed.

    I started to do them frame by frame, but I have too many to do. So I’m looking for an alternative to frame by frame.

    I have not used the text tools in AE too much, but I heard this might be the place to start?

    Any tips or tricks would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Check the type preset animation gallery in 6.5. Go to HELP and choose Text Preset Gallery.

    Look under mechanical. I think there’s one close to what you’re describing there.

    Hmmm, I don’t remember there being one in the Final Effects set. Seems most final effects are included in AE 6.5 anyways as the CC plug-ins.

    However the Image Lounge plug-ins has exactly what you seek. It does type ons with cursors of many different sorts. It will also auto blink them for you as well if you wish.

    Just a type on is a cinch using AE’s text animations, but the cursor is a little bit more of a bear.

    The text-animation preset including an underscore cursor is called:

    Multi-line -> Word Processor

    If you want to change the underscore into a full block:

    add a scale- and anchorPoint-property to the first animator.
    scale the underscore character way up (something like scale = [100,1600])
    and then adjust the vertical anchorpoint untill it lines up.

    Our Text Anarchy plugin set has a TypeOn plugin, which has a variety of cursors and additional options.
